Thank you for your offer. The city is overflowing with apples this year. We only have the capacity to handle a very small percentage of the local bounty so offer the following information.
We will only be accepting apples starting the 29th of August. The kitchen will be open to receive apples only on Mondays from 9 am until 2 pm (except for Labour Day) and on Tuesdays until noon. We have to set these limits because we must process them right away as we do not have storage capacity for fresh apples. Please call to let us know you would like to deliver so that we can schedule you in and prevent you from making a trip if we have reached our capacity for the week.
We are clear that we will only accept apples that have not been picked off the ground and that do not have apple maggot. To check, cut open 6 - 10 of your apples and check to see if there are any brown trails in the apple flesh - even one is too many. These are made by the larvae of the apple maggot fly and if you keep looking you can also find the white worm itself. Although individual homeowners can choose to make applesauce with these apples, we will NOT be accepting them. We will test your apples as they come in and will send them back home with you if they are infected.
If you have apple maggots in your fruit here is a link to information about prevention for next year.
Also consider offering your apples to neighbours, local group homes, senior residences, or even leaving them on the front street with an invitation for strangers to take them. If they are picked consider offering them to places such as Boyle street, Mustard Seed, Youth Emergency Services, etc. Our partner - E4C may take good eating apples to distribute to the schools - if they are sweet (not cooking apples), free from apple maggot and without bruises. They need to receive them on Monday and Tuesday in order to facilitate distribution. Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton may also be willing to accept the apples for making cider, so check out their dates their cider press is in operation.
Thank you for contacting us.
